Description

Skillet Barbecue Beef Sandwiches are a quick and delicious meal featuring tender strips of thinly sliced roast beef cooked with caramelized onions and coated in a flavorful barbecue sauce. Ready in just 15 minutes, these sandwiches are perfect for a stress-free dinner piled high on your favorite sandwich buns.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwich Filling

  • 1 small white onion (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/3 cup chili sauce (such as Heinz)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lb very thinly sliced deli roast beef (cut into strips or steak, again cut into very thin strips)

For Serving

  • Sandwich buns

Instructions

  1. Sauté the Onions: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced white onion and sauté until tender and beginning to turn golden, about 5 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Sauce: Add barbecue sauce, chili sauce, lemon juice, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet with the onions. Whisk them together until fully combined into a smooth sauce. Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring occasionally, over medium heat for about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Cook the Beef: Add the thinly sliced roast beef strips to the skillet. Gently toss to evenly coat the beef with the sauce. Cook just until the beef is heated through, about 2-3 minutes, avoiding overcooking to keep the beef tender.
  4. Serve: Remove the skillet from heat. Pile the barbecue beef and onions high on sandwich buns and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use very thinly sliced deli roast beef or thinly sliced leftover steak for best results.
  • Adjust the brown sugar to taste if you prefer a sweeter or less sweet sauce.
  • You can add pickles or coleslaw on the sandwich for extra texture and flavor.
  • To save time, slice the onions in advance or substitute with pre-sliced onions.
  • Serve with a side of chips or a simple salad for a complete meal.
