Ingredients
Scale
Beef and Seasoning
- 1/2 lb 80/20 ground beef
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Burger Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
Toppings
- 2 slices medium cheddar or American cheese
- 2 ripe tomato slices
- Iceberg or green leaf lettuce leaves
- Thinly sliced onion, as desired
- 2 hamburger buns
Instructions
- Form Patties: Gently shape the ground beef into round patties weighing about 1/2 lb each. Avoid overhandling or compressing the meat tightly to keep the patties juicy.
- Season Patties: Season the patties with salt and pepper only after they are formed to help create a crust when grilling.
- Preheat Grill: Heat the grill on high to ensure it is very hot, which maximizes crust formation on the burgers.
- Grill Patties: Place the patties on the grill and cook to your desired doneness using the temperature guide: 120°F for rare, 130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for medium, 150°F for medium-well, and 160°F for well-done.
- Add Cheese: When the burgers are almost done cooking, place the cheese slices on top of each patty and let melt for 1-2 minutes.
- Assemble Burgers: Toast the hamburger buns if desired. Spread the burger sauce on buns, then layer lettuce, tomato slices, the cheesy beef patties, and onions before topping with the other bun half.
Notes
- For juicier burgers, avoid overworking the ground beef when forming patties.
- Adding salt right before grilling helps develop a flavorful crust.
- Use a meat thermometer to accurately cook burgers to preferred doneness.
- Toast buns on the grill for added texture and flavor.
- Customize toppings to suit your taste preferences.
