Description

Tender and flavorful baby back ribs cooked low and slow in a crock pot, then finished under the broiler with a tangy barbecue sauce for a deliciously charred finish. Perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or weekend feast.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Ribs and Seasoning

  • 2 racks baby back ribs (about 3 to 4 pounds)
  • 1 onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons rib rub (or homemade rib rub)

Sauce

  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup chili sauce
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (of choice)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the ribs: Remove the silver membrane from the back of the ribs. Rub both the front and back of the ribs evenly with the rib rub or homemade spice mixture.
  2. Set up crock pot: Slice the onion and garlic. Place the onion, sliced garlic, water, and ribs into the slow cooker.
  3. Cook the ribs: Cover and cook on high for 4 hours or on low for 8 hours until the ribs are fork tender and easily pull away from the bone.
  4. Preheat broiler: When ribs are done, preheat your oven broiler to high.
  5. Prepare the sauce: In a bowl, combine ketchup, chili sauce, and barbecue sauce. Brush this sauce mixture generously onto both sides of the ribs.
  6. Broil ribs: Place ribs under the broiler for 3 to 5 minutes or until the sauce is bubbly and charred to your liking. Watch closely to prevent burning.
  7. Serve: Remove ribs carefully and serve hot, optionally with your favorite side dishes.

Notes

  • Removing the silver membrane from the ribs ensures tenderness and allows flavors to penetrate better.
  • If you prefer a homemade rib rub, combine brown sugar, paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder.
  • Broiling (or grilling) at the end adds a delicious smoky char and caramelization to the ribs.
  • Make sure to watch ribs closely under the broiler to avoid burning the sauce.
  • These ribs pair well with coleslaw, baked beans, or cornbread for a classic barbecue meal.
