Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 3.5 oz dark chocolate (70% cocoa)
- 2 tbsp refined coconut oil
- 2 tbsp orange juice (freshly squeezed)
- ½ tsp orange zest
- 2 tbsp icing sugar (powdered sugar)
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder (plus extra for dusting)
Instructions
- Chop Chocolate: Chop or break the bar of dark chocolate into small pieces to ensure even melting.
- Melt Chocolate: Place a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of boiling water, add the chopped chocolate to the bowl, and stir continuously until it is fully melted and smooth.
- Add Coconut Oil: Remove the bowl from heat and stir in the refined coconut oil until the mixture is well combined and shiny.
- Add Orange and Sugars: Stir in the freshly squeezed orange juice, orange zest, icing sugar, and cocoa powder, mixing thoroughly until the mixture is completely smooth and homogenous.
- Chill Mixture: Place the bowl in the refrigerator and chill until the mixture becomes firm enough to handle, typically taking 25 minutes. Check regularly for the perfect consistency suitable for shaping.
- Shape Truffles: Using a small spoon, scoop portions of the chilled mixture and roll them into balls between your palms. To prevent melting, dust your palms with cocoa powder before rolling, especially if your hands are warm. If too sticky, chill mixture a bit longer.
- Dust Truffles: Sprinkle cocoa powder on a plate and roll each truffle ball until evenly coated with the powder for a beautiful finish.
- Store and Serve: Store the finished truffles in an airtight container and serve at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Use dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa content for rich flavor.
- Refined coconut oil is preferred to avoid coconut flavor overpowering the truffles.
- You can substitute orange zest with lemon zest for a different citrus twist.
- If mixture remains sticky, additional chilling helps to firm it up for easier rolling.
- Store truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
- For extra flair, roll truffles in crushed nuts or desiccated coconut instead of cocoa powder.
- Ensure orange juice is freshly squeezed for the best aroma and taste.
